The Beauty of West Virginia... The beauty of West Virginia’s emerald-colored hillsides belie the massive devastation in valleys below. At the foot of majestic Powell’s Mountain is the community of Birch River, named for the waterway which caused so much destruction during June’s monumental flooding. The frame of their mobile home is all that remains of this family’s possessions after the river swept away everything they owned. They were able to pull the frame from the river with an excavator. The family now lives in tents and a camper hoping to sell the metal frame to a scrap dealer. North Carolina Baptist Men and Women Disaster Relief teams have served in Birch River.
