Outdoor Weekend 2013
On May 17-18, 125 men from 22 churches gathered at Camp Caraway for the fifth annual Men's Ministry Outdoor Weekend. Sponsored by NC Baptist Men, the event drew men from all across the state. The purpose of the event was to encourage churches to reach out to men utilizing a well-rounded ministry approach that encompasses outreach, spiritual growth, and missions involvement. Church leaders were also encouraged to investigate and consider establishment of an outdoor ministry. The theme for the weekend was "Delight Yourself in the Lord", taken from Psalm 37: 3-4. The verse reminds us that God is the seat of all joy in our lives and the measure of a successful life. Dick Jones, award-winning freelance writer from High Point, was keynote speaker for the weekend. Dick's outdoor column, "Off the Porch", can be read in several North Carolina newspapers. He also contributes to national outdoor magazines and websites.
Mark your calendar for next year's event - May 16-17, 2014!
Here are a Few Highlights from the Weekend:
Joe Eaker and Tommy Lovelace of Mount Zion Church in Cherryville, David Brown of Elizabeth Baptist in Shelby, and Lew Weatherspoon of Piney Grove Chapel in Angier, (pictured in order, right) led the skeet demonstration and competition. Each participant got five initial shots. Those who shot 5 for 5 then continued until a winner was determined. This year's winner was Terry Caldwell of FBC Maiden.
Archers for Christ founder and president, Daryl Hazelwood (center, orange shirt)
brought his father, Mike, (left, green shirt)
to be with us this year. They both led sessions on bow safety and technique in the morning, and in a 3-D target shooting competition in the afternoon. Participants, both experienced and novice, enjoyed taking aim at the targets. Scott Mackey of Hermon Baptist in Waxhaw (standard bow) and Josh Pillips of FBC Icard (own equipment) won the archery competition. Archers for Christ is located in Siloam, NC.
Brad Helms of Anthony Grove Baptist in Crouse (right, orange shirt)
led the demonstration on pistol safety and shooting technique in the morning. Brad served as range master for the afternoon competition, and was assisted by Steve Morris of Shady Grove Baptist in Cherryville. Mike Wescott of FBC Icard won the competition this year.
Our guest speaker, Dick Jones, led everyone in a class on surf fishing on Saturday morning. In the afternoon, many tried their hand at landing the "big one" at Caraway Lake. Competition was held for largest fish caught and most fish caught.
Tony Abernathy of Mount Zion Baptist in Cherryville once again served as range master for our .22 rifle competition. Steve Couch of Hermon Baptist in Durham and Gene Kirby of FBC Drexel assisted. These men serve on NCBM's State Men's Ministry Committee. The competition was won this year by Barry Michael of FBC Maiden in a close competition with fellow church member Dennis Smith.
, award-winning freelance writer from High Point provided leadership for the weekend as our keynote speaker. He and his fox-red Labrador retriever, Larry, enjoyed fellowshipping with participants. Exceptional music was provided Friday night by "The James Brothers and Sister Caroline
" a trio from the High Point area. Participants also had the opportunity to take on the Camp Caraway zip line, a high-ropes apparatus twenty-five feet in the air. Finally, a "Top Shot" award was given to the marksman with the highest overall scores in rifle, skeet, archery, and pistol combined. This year's Top Shot was Michael Pardue
, pastor of FBC Icard. Congratulations Michael!
