Good Shepherd Ministry Center

North Carolina Baptist Men has partnered with IICD (International Indigenous Community Development) in the construction of a Health Clinic and Training Center. The center will function as a primary care medical clinic and will be devoted to changing communities through development projects and Christian public health education. Guatemalan nationals will be trained to serve as community health evangelists, dedicated to meeting both the physical and spiritual needs of the Quiche in the name of Jesus Christ. The facility will also be used to train pastors, youth, women, and children. When completed, the facility will have capacity for 55 beds for overnight events. It will also include four examination rooms, a pharmacy, offices, a small cafeteria/conference room, a vocational workshop, and bathroom/showers.

But the most important thing is that, thanks to the service of hundreds of volunteers,  MINISTRY IS OCCURRING at the Good Shepherd Center. Over 1400 patients were seen, 21 construction and ministry teams were housed, and six conferences were hosted at the center in 2013!

We Still Need You!
Great progress is being made, but we still need teams to come and serve throughout 2014. Here's some ways teams will be serving:

Health Clinic and Training Center Construction Teams
Teams of 8-12 are needed to complete construction of a health clinic and training center in central Guatemala. The center will function as a primary care medical clinic and will be devoted to changing communities through development projects and Christian Public health education. The facility will also be used to train pastors, youth, women, and children. Teams will have supervision and will work with Guatemalans on-site to construct an "old-world style" rock, adobe, wood, and tile structure. Tasks may involve: 1) Adobe production - mixing and forming adobe blocks; 2) masonry/concrete work; 3) framing; 4) finish and trim work; 6) roofing-framing and tiles; 7) plumbing and electrical; or 8) landscaping, etc. Flexibility is a must, as it will be impossible to know exactly what task teams will be doing until a week or two before your team arrives. As time draws nearer, missionary will be in touch with team leader concerning the status of the project and options for team tasks. NC Baptist Men will arrange for airfare, volunteer missionary insurance, and other logistics, including transportation to and from the airport, daily transportation, and lodging. Team will live on-site at the center. Team will prepare breakfast and lunch at the center. Supper can either be prepared at the Center or team may choose to eat out in restaurants a couple of nights.

Village Evangelism Teams
Teams of 8-10 are needed to travel daily – Monday thru Friday - into strategic villages to conduct a variety of outreach ministries. Cornerstone of the team’s ministry will be a Vacation Bible School/Backyard Bible Club type ministry with younger children in the morning, and older children in the afternoon (or vice versa, depending on school schedule.) The team will also have opportunity to visit in people’s homes throughout the week. Other possible ministries, depending on the team’s giftedness, may include sports ministry, music, ministry to women (teaching a craft or other skill), and ministry to men (based on men’s interest activity). Once team is formed, team leader will work out specific ministries with local missionary contacts. Volunteers will stay at the Good Shepherd Center and travel about 45 minutes each day into villages for ministry. NCBM will arrange for airfare, volunteer missionary insurance, and other logistics, including transportation to and from the airport, daily transportation, and lodging. Team will prepare breakfast at the center, take lunch with them, and possibly eat at restaurants on the way back into town each day. Team will need to bring ministry supplies with them. Background checks are required of any volunteer working with children or youth. NCBM will send information concerning background checks.

Medical Teams
Teams of 10-12 will work in a mobile clinic setting in a strategic village or town. Teams are placed in the most needed areas, as well as areas where indigenous pastors are actively working to start new churches.  Teams should be built around 2-3 primary care providers (MDs, DOs, NPs, or PAs) who will see the patients.  Medication dispensary should be manned by a health care practitioner (pharmacist preferred, but RNs also work well in this capacity).  Teams will need to bring in the medications they will use for their team, counting on primary care providers seeing approximately 30 patients per person; per day (some see more).  Detailed information on what to bring and potential conditions encountered, will be provided. Other team members serve as support personnel, and should be mostly comprised of medical professionals to maximize the effect of the team. Organization of the clinic is done by local missionary, in conjunction with national believers who know the culture.  Evangelism is organized and led by the nationals, who speak the language and know the culture. NCBM will arrange for airfare, volunteer missionary insurance, and other logistics, including transportation to and from the airport, daily transportation, and lodging. The team will stay at the Good Shepherd center if the mobile clinic setting is close.  If not, the team will stay in a hotel closer to the site. Meals will either be at the center, at the hotel, and/or in local restaurants, depending on where team stays.

Dental Teams
Teams of 10-12 will work in a mobile clinic setting in a strategic village or town. Teams will be placed in high need areas, including schools, municipalities, villages, towns, churches, or even homes (occasionally). Teams should be built around 2, and preferably 3 dentists.  Dental assistants and hygienists are needed to provide dental cleaning and fluoridation of teeth. There is a great need for restorative care (fillings, etc.), but there will also be many with teeth too damaged for adequate restoration. Teams will need to bring all of their equipment, supplies, and medications needed, as well as dispensing bags, markers to write on the bags, gloves, etc. Detailed information on what to bring and potential conditions encountered, will be provided.
