Hurricane Irene Update

2013: We are still working in Pamlico County. We are doing repair/rebuild work. Less than 15 homes to go!  Help us finish by the end of August which is approximately the 2 year anniversary of Hurricane Irene.

Logistics: Lodging, showers, and food are provided at this site.

Background Checks: All churches, organizations, groups, agencies, “any one” bringing youth (under the age of 18) must provide background checks on each adult (18 yrs. and older).  Additional information regarding the process will be provided at registration.

Nature of Work: to serve those were affected by Hurricane Irene.  Please remember that re-build, debris removal and mud-out is only the tool for reaching people for Christ.  Love them and pray for them.  Most jobs will be re-build but also may range from removing trees from homes and property, to assisting with tear-out.  Remember, no matter which projects you receive, it is an opportunity for ministry in the name of Jesus.

Rebuild:  Construction work including but not limited to: installation of sheetrock, floors, walls, doors, windows, finish work, etc.

Tear-Out is messy hard work. Go prepared. See following “What to Take” list.  This list should be used as a guide to remind you of items you will need for mud-out/tear-out work.

Paperwork: each team member must turn in a completed medical form and a signed liability release form.

January, 2012- Hurricane Irene Update- NC Baptist Men (and women) disaster volunteers were extremely active following the damage caused by Hurricane Irene on Aug 27/28, 2011.  NCBM Feeding units and teams were setup in New Bern, Williamston, and Manteo.  Feeding units and teams from Florida and Mississippi were setup in Washington and Ahoskie, respectively.  Total meal count is over 174,800.  Recovery teams from NC, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia completed 1,700+ jobs (mudout/tearout/chainsaw/temporary repair).  These units were supported by Admin, Assessment, Chaplaincy, Medical, Safety, Shower, and Laundry teams.  Disaster Relief Temporary Emergency Childcare volunteers deployed to Pamlico County and posted 135 childcare days.  Approximately 60 people accepted Christ.  Other numbers: 6,700 showers, 2,000 laundry loads; 10,800 volunteer days

We are thankful for the following Baptist State Conventions that have responded with volunteer teams: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and West Virginia.  However, there are still many projects to complete. More applicants have completed FEMA applications than in Hurricanes Ivan/Frances combined (NC only).

Sites where we are working or have worked:

Feeding: (all kitchens now closed) Manteo Baptist Church, Memorial Baptist in Williamston, FBC New Bern, Washington (Florida Baptist),
Ahoskie (Mississippi Baptists), OBX.

Recovery only: Manteo, Williamston, Greenville, Atlantic, Kinston, Belhaven, New Bern, Ahoskie (all closed). Pamlico County and OBX are open

Temporary Childcare: Pamlico County (closed)

Shower/Laundry: Rodanthe, Salvo, Avon, Hyde (closed) and Pamlico counties

Thank you for praying for those that are affected by Hurricane Irene. Pray also for the volunteers that respond, that they may bring God glory for the good work they are doing.
