Honduras HN15-128

HN15-128
November 7-14, 2015

EVANGELISTIC FOCUS: The purpose of our being in Honduras is to partner with Honduran congregations in proclaiming the gospel of Christ. All teams (including construction) will be encouraged to participate in evangelistic outreach to the community in which they work. This may include prayer walks, door-to-door visitation, the showing of the “Jesus” film, VBS or Backyard Bile Clubs for the children, etc. Please keep this in mind as you prepare your team. Most of our area of focus in 2015 will be south of Tegucigalpa, in and around the Choluteca area, as there are many needs there.

TRIP COST: The basic price of the trip will be $1150 per person*. This includes round-trip airfare, insurance, in-country transportation, in-country logistical support, lodging, meals, orientation materials, and T-shirt. You will need to take an additional $40 cash with you for airport exit tax, plus money for souvenirs you may want to buy. (Price does not include materials that will be needed for ministry, i.e., VBS materials, building materials, medical supplies, etc. See below.)

MATERIALS COST: Each team must provide the cost of materials for construction projects. Unless otherwise stated, the cost of for most projects will be $3000 per team. This amount must be received in our office 30 days prior to your departure date so that job site preparation may begin and materials delivered on-site prior to your arrival. Medical teams will also incur cost of $500 to cover the services of a Honduran doctor and other related expenses. Evangelism teams will supply their own needed materials, which should be in Spanish (VBS material, tracts, Bibles, etc.)

TEAMS: Teams should be comprised of no more than 12 members, and no less than 7 members. Having a Spanish translator will be very helpful to every team. Evangelism and medical teams will need two translators. If you cannot provide a translator, our on-site coordinators can contract translators for your team. Cost is $130 per translator for the week. Construction teams need at least one member who has strong construction and/or block laying skills. A Honduran foreman will work with your team. On-site coordinators will arrange all logistics. Each team should bring one or two people to assist in food preparation – or rotate that duty among team members. Applicants must be at least 18 years old to participate (16 if accompanied by a parent or guardian).

HEALTH: Team members must be in good physical health. Anyone with a chronic medical condition should not volunteer for these projects. Many areas of work will be quite hot and dusty. Volunteers will need to make sure the following shots are up to date: Typhoid, Hepatitis A, and Tetanus. Malaria pills are also recommended for most areas. Tell whoever administers your shots that you will be traveling to Honduras. (They may suggest other shots. This is up to you.)

TRAVEL: Travel to Honduras requires a passport. Passports must have at least three months remaining from time of departure. All travel will be arranged by NC Baptist Men. Trip dates are listed on the back of this page. Volunteers must depart from Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh/Durham, Greenville (SC), or Atlanta. (Travel may be possible from other cities, but could involve an additional cost.)

LIVING AND WORKING CONDITIONS: Those participating in this effort must be flexible and willing to work as a member of the team. Travel, living, and working conditions may be difficult at times. The work may be quite strenuous and the climate will be hot. Once applications and deposits have been received, team members will be sent an orientation manual, which will answer many questions about the trip. There is a special orientation manual for medical teams.

OTHER: Smoking, chewing tobacco, and drinking alcoholic beverages is highly offensive to Honduran Christians. Team members must refrain from these activities while in Honduras. Also, be aware that tattoos, multiple ear piercings (ear lobe, center of ear), and facial piercing are “no-nos” for Honduran Christians. Team members MUST cover tattoos and remove extra piercings.
