Kenya KY18-002

KY18-002
Houses of Hope / Teaching

February 6-16, 2018

North Carolina Baptist Men, working in cooperation with the Baptist Convention of Kenya, will sponsor teams to the African nation of Kenya in 2018. The Kenya Baptist Convention has undertaken a bold initiative of planting 1000 new house churches in the next several years. One of the strategies for doing this involves community service projects in which mission teams help build a house for four needy families in strategic church plant areas. These are usually widows, many of whom are forced to move back to their home place after their husband dies. They are often at the mercy of the community for any housing at all. The house building project brings the community together for service to one of its members and exposes them to the gospel through a house dedication service. Local pastors are active in planning, conducting, and follow-up of the project with the goal of starting a Bible Study in the new homes, and eventually a new church in the area. Teams will also have great opportunity to do children’s ministry, women’s ministry, eye-glass clinics, and/or witness in local schools.

Team Size:    Because of transportation costs, ideal team size is six (6) to eight (8) members. But larger groups – up to 16 – can also be accommodated. Individuals or couples may also be able to add to an existing team.

Logistics:  NC Baptist Men will arrange airfare, lodging, in-country transportation, and other logistics for each team. A Kenyan support team will work with each team once on the field, including foreman and skilled laborers for construction teams.

Trip Costs:    Exact cost of the project will depend on current airfare rates, but will be approx. $2300-2800 per person. Summer months see the highest airline fares. Price includes airfare, food, lodging, in-country transportation, one night's stay in a game park, orientation, and insurance.

Materials Costs:  A group of eight volunteers typically build four houses per trip. Cost of each house is $400. ($1600 per team of eight; $3200 for team of sixteen, etc.). IF funds are available, NCBM will help with this cost for the first four houses. BUT all teams should be prepared to furnish this cost if necessary, as NCBM funds may not be available.

Trip includes a one-night stay at a game park. If team chooses not to do the game park they can work those days.
