Deliver Window Fans

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 3,000 deaths were reported due to exposure to extreme heat from 1999 to 2003. When heat and humidity levels reach dangerous levels, window fans can provide much needed, energy efficient relief.

  • Organize a Fan Drive donation a month in advance. Advertise to your church and local community through flyers and word-of-mouth for new or lightly used box fan or oscillating fan donations. The retail cost of a fan is approximately $20.
  • Recruit a team of volunteers to organize the drop offs and to deliver the fans.
  • Consider focusing the recipients of the fans to senior citizens, adults with disabilities or respiratory problems, and low-income families with children. Ask around the church to identify those in need.
  • Designate teams to deliver fans at different areas.
  • When your team delivers the fans, take some time to chat with the homeowners. Ask if they need help setting up the fan.

Tips

If your city generally organizes fan drives, consider collaborating with local organizations such as the fire department, electric utility company, housing authority, social services, or other charities.
