GU22-136
Vision Trip to Uspantan
October 8-15, 2022

HISTORY and CURRENT:
Baptists on Mission (BOM), working with former IMB missionaries Roger and Vicki Grossmann has sent teams to Guatemala since 2011. During that time, hundreds of volunteers have served in construction of the beautiful Good Shepherd Center and Medical Clinic in Quetzaltenango. Teams have served in construction, leadership training, medical clinics, student ministry, and more. Good Shepherd Ministries also operates the Good Shepherd Children’s Home, which lovingly cares for and nurtures the spiritual lives of children ages birth to 18. This facility is also in Quetzaltenango. In a typical year, Baptists on Mission sends between 20-25 mission teams to serve with Good Shepherd Ministries in Guatemala.

WHY USPANTAN:
Uspantán is one of the largest and fastest growing towns in the department of El Quiché (approximately 5 hours from Guatemala City) For years, Roger and Vicki Grossman have developed and cultivated relationships with congregations in Uspantan. This has included regular visits from Roger for the purpose of leadership training, encouragement, and church development. The desire is to bring partners to help strengthen these congregations through leadership development, outreach to the community, church planting, and more. Subsequent teams will serve through the Baptists on Mission Guatemala Partnership and under the direction of Roger and Vicki Grossmann.

THE VISION TRIP:
A team of 10-12, comprised of 3 leaders from select Baptist Associations in NC, who are prayerfully dedicated to the possibility of cultivating a long-term (at least three years) relationship in Uspantan, will travel to meet leadership, hear what God is already doing in the area, and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit as to how they may come alongside these congregations for support, encouragement, and mutually-agreed upon mission endeavors.

THE LOGISTICS:
Baptists on Mission will arrange all details of the trip, which will take place the week of October 8-15, 2022. The team will depart North Carolina early on Saturday, arrive in Guatemala City around noon, and travel the 5-6 hours via van to Uspantan. The team will stay in hotel during the week. Schedule will include: 1) worship and fellowship on Sunday; 2) visits in the churches, community and surrounding area on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday; 3) travel to Quetzaltenango on Thursday; 4) tour the ministries of both the Good Shepherd Center and the Good Shepherd Children’s Home; 5) travel to the airport in Guatemala City early Saturday morning for late-morning or early afternoon departure and late night arrival back into North Carolina. Reporting, debriefing, evaluation, and discussion sessions will be held throughout the course of the trip.

COSTS:
Estimated cost for the trip will be $1800, plus or minus. Final cost will be determined by cost of airline tickets, which fluctuate. Costs will include airfare, in-country transportation, lodging, volunteer missionary insurance, and most meals.

OTHER:
Currently, as of this writing, for entry into Guatemala, each participant will need a valid passport with at least 6 months remaining on it, proof of full COVID vaccination OR a negative COVID test that was administered no more than 3 days prior to the trip. Immunizations include up to date on tetanus and hepatitis A.
