KY21-009
Houses of Hope
October 5-14, 2021

As part of a church planting strategy, houses are being built for families in need. Each mission team of 6-8 will build four houses in four days. A small team of Kenyan builders will work alongside the team. The recipients of the houses are determined by the village, working in conjunction with area pastors. Recipients are usually widows, women who have been abandoned by their husbands, or someone with a disability. Often, these families are unable to keep their houses up to safe, sanitary standards. The house building project brings the community together for service to one of its members and exposes them to the Gospel through a house dedication service. Local pastors are active in planning, conducting, and follow-up of the project. After the team departs, the pastors come back to the village and conducts a 12 week Bible study in the new homes. The hope is that out of these home Bible studies, a new church will begin.

In addition, teams will have opportunity to visit door to door throughout the village, with a translator, explaining why the team is there, sharing their testimony, and explaining the plan of salvation. The team is also encouraged to conduct children’s ministry, women’s ministry, and/or witness in local schools as opportunity arises. Children gather at each site, curious as to what is going on. Teams can plan to gather the children to tell Bible stories, sing songs, and play games. One of the local pastors will translate.

Logistics:  NCBM will arrange airfare, lodging, in-country transportation, and other logistics for each team. A Kenyan support team will work with each team once on the field, including foreman and skilled laborers for construction teams.

Trip Costs:    Exact cost of the project will depend on current airfare rates, but will be approx. $2200-2600 per person. Summer months see the highest airline fares. Price includes airfare, food, lodging, in-country transportation, one night's stay in a game park, orientation, and insurance.

Materials Costs:  A group of eight volunteers typically build four houses per trip. Cost of each house is $400. ($1600 per team of eight; $3200 for team of sixteen, etc.). IF funds are available, NCBM will help with this cost for the first four houses. BUT all teams should be prepared to furnish this cost if necessary, as NCBM funds may not be available.

Trip includes a one-night stay at a game park (this is included in the trip cost estimate). If team chooses not to do the game park they can work those days.
