Puerto Rico PR19-035

PR19-035
Sept 15-21, 2019

EVANGELISTIC FOCUS: The purpose of being in Puerto Rico is to show God's love in a tangible way.  All teams are encouraged to share your faith in word and deed.  Please keep this in mind as you prepare your team.

TYPE OF WORK: The focus for 2018-2019 is rebuilding roofing systems in the San Juan area.  High winds from Hurricanes Irma and Maria destroyed much of the roofing framework. Teams must be prepared to set rafters and install tin or similar roof covering.  Baptists on Mission will provide most tools.  If you have a favorite tool to use feel free to bring it.

TRIP COST:   $600.  This includes round-trip airfare, insurance, in-country transportation, in-country logistical support, lodging, most meals, orientation materials, T-shirt and building materials. You will need to take additional cash for souvenirs you may want to buy. *In this era of unpredictable airline costs, we will make every effort to maintain this price throughout the year. Be aware that some teams may be required to pay a bit extra if ticket prices spike.

TEAMS: Groups are preferred over individual applicants.  Participants must be at least 18 years old to participate (15 IF accompanied by a parent or guardian). Teams should be comprised of no more than 8 and no less than 5 members.  One (1) team member may be asked to provide housekeeping and meal preparation at the church each day. A Spanish translator may be available most times but it would be helpful to have an interpreter on the team.  Construction teams need to be proficient at installing rafters and tin roofing.

HEALTH:  Team members must be in good physical health. Anyone with a chronic medical condition should not volunteer for these projects. All areas of work will be hot and humid.  We recommend that each person follow CDC guidelines and discuss with a family physician regarding the best immunization plan.

TRAVEL:  Travel to Puerto Rico DOES NOT require a passport. All travel will be arranged by Baptists on Mission.  All trips will be seven (7) days duration, Sunday - Saturday. Volunteers must depart from Charlotte or Raleigh/Durham. (Travel may be possible from other cities, but could involve an additional cost.)

LIVING AND WORKING CONDITIONS: Those participating in this effort must be flexible and willing to work as a member of the team. Travel, living, and working conditions may be difficult at times. The work may be quite strenuous and the climate will be hot and humid. Housing is in a church building, dormitory style.  Cold water showers and bathrooms provided in the church.  Meals provided.  Once applications and deposits have been received, team members will be sent orientation materials, which will answer many questions about the trip.

OTHER:  Smoking, chewing tobacco, and drinking alcoholic beverages is not permitted. Team members must refrain from these activities while in Puerto Rico.
